They ask Claude or ChatGPT to produce a report, update a record or file a request without opening your application, and that puts a new question on the product roadmap. Is your API enough, or do you also need an MCP server?

MCP vs API is a comparison that confuses even technical teams, because both let one piece of software talk to another. They're built for different callers, and that difference decides what you should build next.

In this guide, we explain what each one does, how MCP and APIs compare, whether MCP replaces your API and how to tell if your product needs an MCP server. A mobile app uses one to fetch a user's orders, and a payment provider uses one to confirm a charge.

APIs are built for developers. A developer reads the documentation, picks which endpoints to call and in what order, and writes code to handle each response. Because the integration is fixed when it's built, an API behaves predictably and is easy to test.

That predictability is why APIs remain the backbone of almost every digital product.
