Xcode gives you two easy ways to do this.\u003C\u002Fp>\u003Cp>\r\n\r\n\u003C\u002Fp>\u003Ch3>The detailed way\u003C\u002Fh3>\u003Cp>\r\n\r\n\u003C\u002Fp>\u003Cp>In Xcode, go to \u003Cem>Product &gt; Perform Action &gt; Build with Timing Summary\u003C\u002Fem>. This runs a build that records each step and shows a total in seconds at the end.\u003C\u002Fp>\u003Cp>\r\n\r\n\u003C\u002Fp>\u003Cp>To read the summary, open the \u003Cem>Report Navigator\u003C\u002Fem>, the last tab in the left-side menu. There are a few things to configure here.\u003C\u002Fp>\u003Cp>\r\n\r\n\u003C\u002Fp>\u003Cp>First, search for \u003Cem>Build Active Architecture Only\u003C\u002Fem>. Set it to \u003Cem>Yes\u003C\u002Fem> for Debug and \u003Cem>No\u003C\u002Fem> for Release. In Debug mode, you only need to build for the simulator or device you are using right now, not for all of them.\u003C\u002Fp>\u003Cp>\r\n\r\n\u003C\u002Fp>\u003Cp>Second, search for \u003Cem>Optimization Level\u003C\u002Fem>. It can be set to No Optimization, Optimize for Speed, or Optimize for Size. If you do not need to debug right away, set Debug to \u003Cem>Optimize for Speed\u003C\u002Fem>. Usually, though, you will want to leave it on \u003Cem>No Optimization\u003C\u002Fem> so you can use breakpoints and inspect variables.\u003C\u002Fp>\u003Cp>\r\n\r\n\u003C\u002Fp>\u003Cp>Also make sure the compilation mode is set to \u003Cem>Incremental\u003C\u002Fem> rather than \u003Cem>Whole Module\u003C\u002Fem> for Debug. That way Xcode rebuilds only your changed files instead of the entire project every time.\u003C\u002Fp>\u003Cp>\r\n\r\n\u003C\u002Fp>\u003Ch2>Part 2: Code analysis\u003C\u002Fh2>\u003Cp>\r\n\r\n\u003C\u002Fp>\u003Cp>Once your project settings are dialed in, it is time for code analysis. Inspecting and improving your functions and calculations can have a big impact on build times.\u003C\u002Fp>\u003Cp>\r\n\r\n\u003C\u002Fp>\u003Cp>How do you inspect every function and expression? Set a couple of flags at the target level, each with a maximum time in milliseconds. Xcode then warns you about any function or expression that exceeds those times. Go to \u003Cem>Build Settings &gt; Other Swift Flags\u003C\u002Fem> and add:\u003C\u002Fp>\u003Cp>\r\n\r\n\u003C\u002Fp>\u003Cp>\u003Cstrong>-Xfrontend -warn-long-function-bodies=100-Xfrontend -warn-long-expression-type-checking=50\u003C\u002Fstrong>\u003C\u002Fp>\u003Cp>\r\n\r\n\u003C\u002Fp>\u003Cp>Now any function that takes more than 100ms to type-check gets a warning, and so does any expression over 50ms. You also need to add one more flag to the \u003Cem>Other Swift Flags\u003C\u002Fem> section: \u003Cstrong>-Xfrontend -debug-time-function-bodies\u003C\u002Fstrong>. Then build your project, and the tool reads the build summary from Derived Data. Just do not swing to the other extreme with twice as much code as you need.
